It's kind of a dummy proof thing from Microsoft's viewpoint. The WiFi automatically has a higher value than the wired connection. Windows assigns a metric value based on the speed of the connection, which is why you normally can't play BL2 LAN over a WiFi connection. So if that's not the interface you're connected to each other with, it won't work without some adjustments. It is programmed to find the adapter your system has deemed "most important" (lowest metric value), and only use that one, doesn't matter if it's disconnected even. Normally a hosted game would listen for connections on all available interfaces unless told otherwise, but not this one.
